EN – Mozart’s Requiem is surrounded by an aura of legend and mystery, doubtless as a result of its theme of death and its temporal proximity to the composer’s own demise. During 1791, Mozart indeed received a commission for a funeral mass setting, but died in December the same year, before finishing it. It was finally his pupil Franz Xaver Süssmayr who completed the masterpiece, basing his work on the existing fragments and numerous verbal indications that Mozart left him.
The OCL and the Ensemble Vocal of CMNord come together here under the direction of Matthias Rajczyk to interpret this work, which remains today one of the most famous and emblematic in the religious repertoire. This Requiem evokes intense emotions in the face of the finality of our existence: fear, anger, dispair, sadness, but also hope and comfort. It will be preceded in this concert by the Funeral Music for Queen Mary by Henry Purcell, another composition intended to accompany a burial.
